XML Sitemap Best Practices: Submit the URLs You Want Indexed
An XML sitemap is a discovery aid, not a guarantee of indexation. It should list the preferred, accessible URLs that deserve to be considered for search—not every URL the site can generate.
Include only preferred indexable URLs
List canonical pages that return a successful response and are intended to be indexed. Exclude redirects, 404s, noindex pages, duplicate parameters and URLs blocked from crawling.
Keep lastmod honest
Update lastmod when the page has materially changed, not simply because a build or script ran. Accurate modification dates help search engines interpret the sitemap as a useful signal.
Handle language versions consistently
Include each important language URL and maintain accurate reciprocal hreflang annotations on the pages themselves. A sitemap does not replace correct language links or canonical tags.
Keep the sitemap current and readable
Use valid XML, the correct host and protocol, stable URLs and sensible file-size limits. Split large sitemaps when appropriate and use an index file if there are multiple sitemaps.
Validate after publishing or retiring pages
Check XML syntax, response codes and URL counts, then compare the sitemap with the live site and redirects. Remove retired URLs and add new preferred pages after they are actually available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this guarantee indexation?
No. These practices help make URLs and content easier to understand, but search engines decide what to crawl and index.
Should every URL be included?
No. Include preferred, useful, indexable pages and keep redirects and duplicates out of the sitemap.
When should the setup be reviewed?
Review it after site migrations, navigation changes, new language versions or changes that create many URLs.
